Community Family Center has a vision for our children and families
Community Family Center (CFC) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation encompassing five long-standing local family and children’s services agencies. (For more details on each agency visit our partners section). The vision of CFC is to construct a new, state-of-the-art facility that will set the standard for delivery of life services in the cities of Highland Park-Highwood. In communities that pride themselves on the highest quality of living for all of their residents, this project will promote healthier families and strengthen the community while achieving significant economies and efficiencies.
CFC’s constituent non profit agencies overwhelmingly serve young children and families from Highland Park and Highwood. Their work is recognized by educators as essential to preparing young children to excel in our award-wining public schools. The services also provide skilled support and counseling to families and individuals, empowering parents and enabling happier and healthier home environments for our children. These objectives – improved center-based early education and family support services –have been acknowledged by North Shore School District 112 and High School District 113 as a direct assistance to overall educational performance and therefore directly benefits every parent, homeowner, school and neighborhood in Highland Park and Highwood.

Formation of CFC grew out of needs for children
Community leaders and early childcare advocates began meeting informally in the mid 1990s to share concerns and strategize solutions related to a shortage of licensable space at existing early childhood centers, substandard facility conditions and a near total lack of center-based infant and toddler care. The group incorporated in 2001 as the Community Family Center, a not-for-profit 501c3 corporation led by a volunteer board of directors comprised of professional child care and family service providers, school administrators and community leaders.
A 2002 needs assessment by the United Way found insufficient child care for infants, preschoolers, and before and after school; insufficient parent education and counseling services; and deficits in services delivered in deteriorating, crowded conditions. Three agencies are housed in aging basements. Four years later, these three needs were noted as among the highest priorities for action during another comprehensive United Way needs assessment. These reports and findings were distributed widely and have been available at both community libraries and in local newspapers.
